About the initiative
Recovering Memory
It is a long-standing Vilnius University initiative involving historical research and the commemoration of individuals who were unjustly dismissed or expelled from VU after 15 June 1940.
Origins and continuity
The VU Recovering Memory initiative, founded and led by Prof. Jurgita Verbickienė, was launched in 2016 and has since become an established annual tradition. Each year, the VU Rector formally presents Memory Diplomas to living nominees, their family members, or the institutions representing them.
Aim of the initiative
The initiative seeks to remember and honour members of the VU community – students and staff – who, due to Lithuania’s turbulent history, the actions of totalitarian regimes, or collaboration by local people, were expelled from the University and denied the opportunity to complete their studies and obtain an education, or to continue their research, teaching, or other activities associated with the University.
The Memory Diploma
The Memory Diploma is a mark of respect and a symbol of restoration to the VU academic community. It is awarded to individuals who were forced to leave VU after 15 June 1940 as a result of actions taken by the University administration or totalitarian regimes. Memory Diplomas that cannot be presented to the recipients or their representatives are held by the VU Museum.
A unique initiative
Recovering Memory is a unique and unprecedented initiative that demonstrates VU’s commitment to taking responsibility for its own history. In 2026, the Recovering Memory initiative received exceptional recognition: the St Christopher Award, granted for civic engagement in preserving historical memory.
