Antanas Gulbinas

Antanas Gulbinas (1904–1993) was born in the village of Paliepiai, Kėdainiai County, into a family of farmers. From 1923 to 1927, he studied at Kėdainiai Gymnasium. In 1927–1932, he studied at the Medical Department of the Faculty of Medicine of Vytautas Magnus University. In 1933–1934, he worked as a medical intern. In 1934, he became a junior assistant at the Dermatology Clinic of Vytautas Magnus University and was promoted to senior assistant in 1936. In 1940, he was appointed head of the Kėdainiai Venereal Diseases Dispensary. In 1941, he was transferred to the Red Cross Sanatorium in Panemunė, where he became its Director. That same year, he was appointed Head of the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases at Vilnius Second Hospital. In 1942, Antanas Gulbinas became Director of the Vilnius Hospital for Skin and Venereal Diseases, where he also headed one department. In 1943, he began working as Head of the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases at the Faculty of Medicine of Vilnius State University, and in 1944, he defended his dissertation at Vytautas Magnus University. In 1946, a commission of the Faculty of Medicine at Vilnius State University decided to confer upon him the title of Professor, but this decision was not approved by the university Rector. In 1951, by Rector’s order No. 752, he was dismissed from his position at the university, officially “due to insufficient workload”. In 1955, Antanas Gulbinas refused to convert his doctoral degree into the Soviet degree of Candidate of Medical Sciences, and as a result, his academic degree and title were revoked (later restored in 1991). From 1951 to 1986, he worked as chief physician at the Šiauliai Skin and Venereal Diseases Dispensary.
