Ruvinas Lakovskis

Ruvinas Lakovskis (1900–1941) was born in Vilkaviškis. From 1908 to 1911, he attended Vilkaviškis Primary School. After private studies, he continued his education at Marijampolė Gymnasium from 1919 to 1921. After graduation, he worked as an accountant in a trading company. In 1921–1922, he completed military service. Afterwards, Lakovskis enrolled in the Mathematics Department of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at the University of Lithuania. However, due to illness (typhus) and later financial difficulties, he had to discontinue his studies. He began working as a secretary of the Vilkaviškis Jewish Community Council. After saving sufficient funds, he resumed his studies at the University of Lithuania and completed mathematics courses in 1929. In 1930, he was appointed teacher of mathematics and geography at Vilkaviškis Jewish Gymnasium, while simultaneously working as a junior laboratory assistant at the Geometry Department of Vytautas Magnus University. In 1931, he received his degree from Vytautas Magnus University and became a junior assistant in the same department. From 1937, he served as a senior assistant. In 1940, Lakovskis was dismissed by order of the Soviet People’s Commissar for Education following the suspension of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Later in 1940, he joined the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences at Vilnius University as a senior assistant, and in the same year became a senior lecturer. On 27 June 1941, he was dismissed under Order No. 30 issued by the Commissioner for Educational Affairs, which was subordinate to the National Socialist authorities. The publication Lietuvos matematikams atminti (In Memory of Lithuanian Mathematicians) notes that he was murdered in Paneriai in 1941.
